Fun Ways to Stay Active this Fall

As the weather starts to get cooler and the days shorter, it’s tempting to hide out in your oversized sweater and leggings drinking hot chocolate. Fall is still a great time to participate in activities though, so take advantage of the sunny days and get out there! From hiking on beautiful trails to picking pumpkins, there’s plenty to do outdoors. If the weather’s poor, just head indoors to your local pool – there’s no excuses this fall!

Go Hiking

The leaves are absolutely stunning in color this time of the year with their mix of red, green, and yellow. Head out to your nearest trail or mountain to get some fresh air while staying active. You can even make a day out of it and bring a picnic to have during the halfway point of the trail.

Rake Leaves

While some people view this as a chore, it’s actually a fun way to bond with your kids. Have a competition with who can make the biggest pile of leaves. Your kids will race around the yard trying to collect as many leaves as possible. Afterwards, you can jump in them together to reward yourself for your hard “work.” Don’t forget to make some hot apple cider as well!

Join a Running Club

If you need a little extra motivation to get yourself out the door, join a local running club to help. It’s hard to cancel a scheduled run when you know you have a group waiting on you. They’ll show you some new areas that you might not have seen before, and you’ll gain a handful of new friends.

Head to the Pool

On days the weather’s a bit too blistery to be outdoors, head to your local gym to jump in their swimming pool. Swimming’s a great activity that gets your heart rate up while minimizing the impact on your joints. If that still doesn’t motivate you, promise yourself you can relax in the hot tub only after swimming for at least half an hour.

Pick a Pumpkin

While this may not have you breaking a sweat, you can get in a decent walk in the larger pumpkin patches. You can even make a workout out of it. Pick up a pumpkin every so often and do 10 squats and 10 bicep curls with it to get your muscles in on the action. If the patch has a corn maze available, challenge your friends to get their way out of it first for even more activity.
